2007 European iPhone sales: above 400 000 units ?

Based on the following sources in this post, i estimate the total number of units sold in 2007 in the UK, France and Germany to 300 000.
According to a note today by RBC Capital’s Mike Abramsky, total european sales could amount to 400 000 to 500 000 units, more than expected.

In France, Orange announced yesterday 70 000 sales. Alice Holzman, Mobile Marketing Director of Orange France, in an interview on BFM today, described the target group as “young, opened, not technofiles…”. Didier Lombard, Orange CEO, is targeting between 400 000 et 500 000 sales in 2008.

Last reports in Germany said T-Mobile sales were lagging, averaging 700 sales/day, which would bring up total sales to approximately 30 000 units by end 2007. Thats seems low and we’re waiting for the official numbers. But T-Mobile is considering suing Vodaphone.

In the UK, Matthew Key, CEO of O2, revealed yesterday that sales amounted to 200 000 units that 60% of customers are sending or receiving at least 25 megabytes data per month. Analysts and industry experts estimate 2008 sales between 400 000 and 500 000.

In all markets, the iPhone helps capture new customers : in the UK, 65% are new O2 customers; in France, 48% are new Orange customers.

The exclusive deals came late in 2007 and probably prevented most mobile operators to run effective marketing campaigns to promote their distribution of the iPhone, targetting new usages. No doubt that the 2007 customers feedback and experience will support 2008 campaigns.
